About the project

GenSTEAMers is an international Erasmus+ cooperation project that explores how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can be meaningfully integrated into STEAM education to support both teaching and learning. As AI technologies continue to evolve and influence everyday life, education systems are faced with an important challenge – How to use these tools in ways that enhance, rather than disrupt, the learning process?

GenSTEAMers responds to this challenge by bringing together educators, researchers, and schools from across Europe to co-create practical, classroom-ready approaches to teaching with AI. Rather than focusing on technology alone, the project places teachers at the centre – recognising their experience, their needs, and the realities of their classrooms as the starting point for innovation.

The project unfolds as a collaborative process that connects research, design, and real-world practice. It begins with an exploration of how GenAI tools align with existing curricula and pedagogical approaches, identifying opportunities as well as limitations. These insights feed directly into the development of the project’s core resource, the GenSTEAMers Action Plan Kit, envisioned as a structured yet flexible set of teaching scenarios, guidelines, and strategies designed to help teachers integrate AI into STEAM subjects in an engaging and responsible way.

Teachers are actively involved throughout the project, not only as participants in training but as contributors to the design and refinement of these materials. This collaborative approach is supported by the development of a digital Teacher Hub, which serves as a space for sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and building a community around innovative teaching practices.

A key phase of the project takes place in schools, where the developed approaches are tested in real classroom settings. This piloting phase allows the consortium to understand how the materials work in practice, taking into account the diversity of educational contexts across countries. Through iterative testing and feedback, the project continuously adapts and improves its outputs, ensuring they remain realistic, usable, and relevant for teachers.

Alongside this, the project places strong emphasis on understanding its broader impact. By collecting both quantitative data and qualitative insights, GenSTEAMers seeks to capture how the use of AI influences teaching practices, student engagement, and learning experiences. These findings are shared through ongoing communication and dissemination activities, reaching educators, stakeholders, and the wider public.

Looking beyond the duration of the project, GenSTEAMers is designed with sustainability in mind. Its results will support the wider adoption of innovative teaching approaches and contribute to ongoing discussions about the role of AI in education. Through continued collaboration and the development of a community of practice, the project aims to ensure that its impact extends well beyond the initial partnership.

Ultimately, GenSTEAMers is about exploring how emerging technologies can be used thoughtfully and responsibly in education, supporting teachers, engaging students, and fostering the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex and digital world.

Project outline

WP1 – Project Management and Coordination

WP1 provides the organisational backbone of the project, ensuring that all activities are effectively coordinated, monitored, and delivered on time. It covers the overall management of the consortium, including communication between partners, financial oversight, reporting, and quality assurance.

This work package ensures that:

  • project activities are implemented in line with the Grant Agreement
  • collaboration between partners runs smoothly
  • risks are identified and addressed early
  • outputs across all work packages remain aligned and coherent

WP1 is essential for maintaining the structure, accountability, and stability of the project, enabling all other work packages to function effectively.

WP2 – Research & GenAI Tools Selection

WP2 establishes the foundation of the project by exploring how Generative AI tools can be integrated into STEAM education. This includes analysing curriculum requirements, identifying appropriate tools, and defining criteria for their educational use.

The goal is to ensure that all subsequent work is grounded in:

  • curriculum relevance
  • pedagogical value
  • ethical and practical considerations

The outputs of WP2 directly inform the development of teaching materials and training in WP3.

WP3 – Development of the Action Plan Kit & Teacher Training

Building on the research phase, WP3 focuses on creating the project’s core pedagogical resource: the GenSTEAMers Action Plan Kit (APK).

This includes:

  • structured teaching scenarios
  • guidance on using GenAI tools in the classroom
  • practical strategies for STEAM teaching

At the same time, teachers participate in training activities designed to support implementation. A digital Teacher Hub is also developed to provide continuous support and foster collaboration among educators.

WP3 acts as the bridge between theory and practice, translating research into usable tools.

WP4 – School Piloting

WP4 brings the project into real classroom environments. Teachers implement the developed materials, allowing the consortium to test:

  • how usable and relevant the resources are
  • how they function in different educational contexts
  • what challenges and opportunities emerge in practice

Piloting is carried out in phases:

  • an initial pilot phase within partner schools
  • a scaled phase involving additional schools

This allows for iterative refinement, ensuring that the final outputs are realistic, adaptable, and sustainable.

WP5 – Impact, Evaluation, Dissemination & Scaling

WP5 runs across the entire project and focuses on understanding and extending its impact.

Its role is to:

  • evaluate how the project affects teaching practices and learning
  • collect both quantitative and qualitative data from implementation
  • share results through dissemination activities
  • support the transfer and scaling of project outcomes

WP5 ensures that the project generates evidence, visibility, and long-term value, extending beyond the immediate partnership.
